The Racial Profiling Across 8 Mile Committee will launch its billboard campaign aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of racial profiling for Black drivers, bikers and pedestrians in jurisdictions outside of Detroit. Besides warning Black residents of the risk, the group seeks to collect, validate and document stories of police harassment as a way to change and challenge the narrative of 8 mile road being a racial divide between the city and the suburbs.
Speakers at the event will address a study by the Detroit Justice Center, Highway Robbery: How Metro Detroit Cops & Courts Steer Segregation And Drive Incarceration.
The report published in March documents that local law enforcement are collecting revenue by disproportionately targeting Black and Brown people with traffic stops and ticketing.
