Solidarity Saturdays #4: Stop The Water Shut Offs!

Saturday, June 2, Noon – 1:30 PM

Detroit Water and Sewerage Department
735 Randolph St, Detroit, Michigan 48226

The City of Detroit plans to shutoff water to more than 17,000 households resuming a condemned practice of denying water and sanitation service to low income households. Meanwhile, Detroit and surrounding cities are in the middle of an alarming Hepatitis A epidemic! This public health crisis has led to national travel warnings not to go to Michigan.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Michigan Department of Human Services recommendations for the prevention Hep A infections advise practicing good hand hygiene, including thoroughly washing hands after using the bathroom, changing diapers, and before preparing or eating food. There is a presumption in these recommendations that one has unfettered access to clean water.  Thus, the DWSD’s irresponsible practice of denying access to water to thousands of people in the midst of the Hep A epidemic implicitly violates the recommendations of government public health experts.

People’s Water Board, Moratorium NOW, and the Michigan Poor People’s Campaign are organizing a weekly Saturday protest until the Mayor calls a moratorium on the shut offs. Please take a moment to click on the invite button on this event, invite your facebook friends, share.

We will be meeting at the downtown DWSD office and marching a short distance to Campus Martius. Please join us to express your public concern!

Please call Valerie Jean (313-704-5150) if you have any questions about this event.
